THE CHALLENGE

Most equine antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is performed by private equine veterinary laboratories (PVLs) and is not yet captured by UK surveillance initiatives. This limits our ability to assess risks and respond effectively to emerging antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threats.

OUR SOLUTION

REIN In AMR bridges this critical gap by leveraging the established EIDS network of equine PVLs that regularly contribute data for the Equine Quarterly Disease Surveillance Report (EQDSR). We facilitate improved data sharing between equine PVLs and the Private Laboratories Initiative (PLI) overseen by the VMD, linking surveillance systems across One Health.

IMPACT

By improving access to private sector data, REIN In AMR enhances the VMD's ability to monitor equine veterinary AMR, providing comprehensive coverage that was previously limited. This enables better-informed decisions and more effective responses to AMR challenges in veterinary medicine.
